Last up to 90 days. ASHRAE rating: MERV 8; 52.2-2007. Get to Know Your Filter: Who is Flanders Filters? This focus on air filtration allows us to maintain and invest in air filtration only, as opposed to diluting research funds into developing products unrelated to air filtration. How Does Flanders Test Their Filters? Our filters are tested at independent air filter testing facilities that are members of the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA). These test facilities utilize a true and proven scientific method for air filter testing created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers, ASHRAE 52.2-2007. Some filter manufacturers use their own rating system, which is not approved as an industry standard. What is a MERV Rating? Minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV for short, is a filter rating system devised by ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers, to standardize and simplify air filter efficiency ratings for the public. The higher the MERV rating, the higher the effectiveness of the air filter. Simply stated, a MERV 13 filter will remove larger amounts of small particles from the air than a MERV 8 filter. MERV ratings allow you to effectively compare one type or brand of filter to another. For example, the EPA guidance for indoor air quality in schools recommends filters between MERV 8 and MERV 13. By comparison, the typical fiberglass throwaway filter used in most homes has a rating of MERV 4 or less. MERV: Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values (ASHRAE Standard 52.2): Group 1: MERV 1 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – less than 20%. Group 1: MERV 2 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – less than 20%. Group 1: MERV 3 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – less than 20%. Group 1: MERV 4 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – less than 20%. Group 2: MERV 5 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – 20%-34.9%. Group 2: MERV 6 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – 35%-49.9%. Group 2: MERV 7 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – 50%-69.9%. Group 2: MERV 8 rating; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – 70%-84.9%. Group 3: MERV 9 rating; avg. efficiency at 1.0-3.0 microns – less than 50%; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – greater than or equal to 85%. Group 3: MERV 10 rating; avg. efficiency at 1.0-3.0 microns – 50%-64.9%; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – greater than or equal to 85%. Group 3: MERV 11 rating; avg. efficiency at 1.0-3.0 microns – 65%-79.9%; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – greater than or equal to 85%. Group 3: MERV 12 rating; avg. efficiency at 1.0-3.0 microns – 80%-89.9%; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – greater than or equal to 90%. Group 4: MERV 13 rating; avg. efficiency at 0.3-1.0 microns – less than 75%; avg. efficiency at 1.0-3.0 microns – Greater than or equal to 90%; avg. efficiency at 3.0-10.0 microns – greater than or equal to 90%. About the NaturalAire Odor Eliminator w/Baking Soda: Flanders NaturalAire Odor Eliminator w/Baking Soda is a pleated filter with the addition of a sodium bicarbonate that maintains a healthy pH balance. This natural, non-toxic additive helps trap contaminants and eliminates food, pet, and human odors rather than cover them up. Each fiber within the filter is coated with baking soda giving them a fuzzy covering. This fuzziness enhances odor removal and increases the contact area for dust to be captured by the filter. With a MERV 8 rating, the Flanders NaturalAire Odor Eliminator w/Baking Soda not only offers superior odor filtration, it also provides protection against many other common household contaminants such as dust mites and those that aggravate allergies like pet dander and pollen. To ensure the best possible air quality for your home and family, it is important to change your filters as recommended. Greater Filter Surface Area for Longer Life and Better Energy Efficiency: The more filter area you have, the better the ability to trap dirt, pollen and other particles. NaturalAire pleated filter design provides more filtration surface area. It’s like having more than one filter. Did You Know? Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate, bicarbonate of soda, sodium hydrogencarbonate, and nahcolite. It may also commonly be referred to as bread soda, or cooking soda. Baking soda is both a naturally occurring material, present in most organic life forms and produced artificially. Baking soda has disinfectant and antiseptic properties and can be an effective fungicide against some organisms. Baking soda is able to react as both an acid and a base.
